Women’s weaver program: crafting rugs & changing lives

At Garnet Hill, we weave integrity and intention into everything we do, and we seek out those same values in the we choose to craft quality pieces for our collection — including rugs.

Many of our handmade rugs come from India, where rugs are historically crafted by men. The women’s weaver program — a groundbreaking initiative led by master weavers Kanhaiya Lal and Ramesh Maurya — keeps this centuries-old craft alive while training women in the time honored art of handweaving and hand-knotting rugs. To date, hundreds of women have completed this program and become professional weavers.

New opportunities for women

It’s still relatively uncommon for women in rural India to work and earn money. To date, the women’s weaver program has taught more than 1,800 women how to handcraft rugs, and it supports them in blazing trails for local women generating income.

Doing good, one rug at a time

Our rug partner in India participates in the women’s weaver program and has made a serious commitment to get more women into the workforce and to help teach women how to create and maintain a work-home balance.

Shared values

Part of the reason we chose our rug partner in India is the positive relationship they have with their artisans. Two examples of our rug partner’s integrity and intention: they pay higher wages than industry standard, and they insist on favorable working conditions for their artisans.

The future looks bright

Prior to the women’s weaver program, there was a decline in the number of people learning the traditional techniques of making rugs by hand. Now women who have mastered this centuries-old craft are generating income to improve their lives, their families, and their communities.
